507 Basic Counseling Techniques
Through a combination of lecture and practice, the participants will learn how to use confrontation, reflection, summarization, clarification and others. This is a course in the fundamentals. That does not mean simple or unsophisticated. Rather, it is an opportunity to identify and fine tune the basic building blocks used by all counselors and other helpers no matter their theoretical orientation.

709-6 Group Work Supervision
Supervision conducted in a group setting can be powerful and rewarding. Melding the basic principles of group work and supervision provides a model of supervision that empowers the supervisee and improves the context in which it occurs. This is a highly experiential learning group. Learning will occur in a group format. Participants will learn about this style of supervision from the “inside out” by being members of a supervision group. Participants should come with a problem, a solution, or a celebration to share in group. Covered during the workshop: basic principles of supervision, supervision group recording techniques, areas of supervision concern and applicable group work modalities and techniques.

350 Recording: The Art and Science of Documentation of Cases
This laboratory deals with the most mundane and most valuable task counselors are required to perform. Through skills practice participants will learn that recording is not just another vexation thrust upon them. Rather, it is among the most valuable of their therapeutic tools. They will be able to integrate their records and write brief, linear, precise notes which will conform to all applicable regulations. Further they will be able to produce a case record which enhances the therapeutic process rather than interfering. Legal requirements for recording, individual, group, and family records, and a variety of progress note formats are but a few of the topics covered. Anyone who must record their work with clients will find this workshop results in greater efficiency in their work.

604 Current Street Drugs
This workshop will benefit any professional who works with a street drug using population. It is designed to enhance participant knowledge of street drugs and their effects, physical and psychological. Attendees will increase their ability to recognize street drug use. They will learn safety methods to respond to users in crisis. The course will cover general concerns about street drugs, stimulants, depressants, narcotics/opiates, inhalants, hallucinogens and psychedelics. Jane Loisdaughter’s approach to this topic is refreshing and intellectually stimulating.

519 Relapse Treatment Strategies
This workshop provides specific strategies for dealing with clients who have experienced a relapse. Participants will learn techniques for assessing the individual, creating an effective treatment plan, specific counseling approaches, and developing an effective continuum of care plan specific to the client who has relapsed.

646 Trauma, Violence and Violation--At-Risk Factors for Substance Abuse
This course describes/analyzes the correlation of substance abuse and violent and abusive behaviors in love relationships within and out of the family. Attendees will be able to describe the type, frequency and precipitating factors of general violence in relationships; discuss characteristics of those who experience violence in marriage and/or relationships; the issues that trigger violence ; and reasons abused partners stay in the relationship. Child abuse comprises another category of family violence. A variety of causes of child abuse are explored and it is discussed how a parent’s substance abuse can result in their being drug dependent, anger-prone, domineering, rigid, having low self esteem, difficulty handling stress and difficulty with self-control. Attendees will learn how trauma, violence and violation are all factors that contribute to the incidence of substance abuse and how these risk factors correlate with substance abuse and vice versa and counseling skills/methods to address both issues

684 Anxiety and Depression--The Ugly Stepsisters of Substance Abuse and Recovery
This workshop focuses on accurately assessing anxiety and depression and the nature of the related feelings, and developing treatment plans that minimize their impact on recovery. Special emphasis will be placed on cognitive behavioral strategies that are consistent with and a complement to 12 step recovery. Topics covered include DSM IV definitions, first and second order feelings, criteria for referral for additional care, feelings control vs. feelings management, "victim--villain" and other dichotomies and reframing.

402 Ethics and Confidentiality
This workshop is designed to provide the CD professional with a reference point in order to assure that the job of providing services can be accomplished in the most ethical manner possible. This workshop will help the CD professional learn the process of ethical decision-making and the difference between ethical and unethical behavior. Ethical counselor, preventionists, teachers and administrators are considered winners. We will also cover the Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Patient Regulation. Participants will learn of the regulation’s impact on practice with CD clients. Exceptions to the rule, special cases, challenges to confidentiality, methods of assuring confidentiality, the difference between confidentiality and privilege, sample forms, records management, as well as the impact of HIPPA and DOT-SAP regulations are among the topics covered in this workshop. Any professional working with a CD population will find this workshop valuable.

632 Dual Diagnosis: Personality Disorders
Historically, clients who have had concurrent diagnoses of chemical dependency and personality disorder were seen as more difficult to treat. Traditional methods did not seem as effective with this population. However, there is growing understanding of the special nature of this type of concurrent condition. This workshop looks at the definitions and concepts of dual diagnosis with personality disorders, special treatment considerations as well as some specific techniques that are helpful in dealing with this special clinical population.

403 Employee Assistance Programming: An Overview
This workshop provides a much needed overview of a continually growing segment of service delivery, EAP's. The origins and development of the EAP movement are reviewed. Participants will learn the 10 element s of modern EAP programs. They will understand and be able to apply the "Five Step Formula" for key personnel. Finally they will be able to identify the relative benefits of the in-house vs. the contracted program.

DOT-SAP TRAINING
This two day course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the revised alcohol and drug testing procedures and to clearly define the goals and responsibilities of the substance abuse professional (SAP). The revised DOT rules became effective August 1, 2001 and the substance abuse professional must meet the revised mandated criteria by no later than December 31, 2003. Individuals wishing to become SAP’s after 12/31/03 will need to complete the education and pass an examination as well before they can do SAP assessments.
DOT-SAP Training includes:
1. Background, rationale and coverage of the DOT drug testing program
2. 49CFR part 40 and the 6 DOT agencies’ drug and alcohol testing rules
3. Key DOT drug testing requirements
4. Key DOT alcohol testing requirements
5. SAP qualifications and prohibitions
6. The role of the SAP and the returning to duty process
7. SAP consultation and communication with employers, MROs and treatment providers
8. Reporting and record keeping requirements
9. Legal and ethical issues that SAPs confront in carrying out their duties
10. Referral resources for the SAP that meets all qualification criteria

William L. Mock, Ph.D., LISW, LICDC, SAP William L. Mock is the Executive Director of the Center for Interpersonal Development and the Chief Trainer for the Ohio Institute for Addiction Studies. His academic degrees include a Doctorate in Psychology and Masters in Social Work. He is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, a licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Independent Social Worker and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor. He has expertise in chemical dependency treatment, family systems treatment and organizational systems development. He has provided training and consultation in several countries to such diverse groups as treatment/prevention providers, family therapists, industry leaders, educators, administrators and criminal justice personnel.
Thomas M. Foley, M.S., C.C.S., C.A.C, SAP
Thomas M. Foley has been in the behavioral health field for more than twenty-five years. He has a Master’s Degree in Human Services and is certified as an addiction counselor and clinical supervisor at the IC&RC level through the Michigan Certification Board. His background includes both clinical and administrative experience. He is the President and Chief Executive Office of Tom Foley Associates, Inc., a Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services licensed training provider. The organization is recognized as an approved training provider by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals. He is also the Executive Director of Professional Training Center, Inc., an organization that specializes in the training of behavioral health professionals on issues related to the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
Joyce T. Jordan, LISW, LICDC, SAP is currently the Director of Clinical Services at Fresh Start, Inc., in private practice at CID and an adjunct faculty instructor in the Human Services Department at Cuyahoga Community College. She has 14 years experience in social services. She is also a Case Presentation Methods Oral Examiner for the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board. She provides training on the local and state levels and participated on the Federal level on the Co-occurring Disorders Committee with Center for Substance Abuse.
Jane Louisdaughter is a self employed Street Drug and Crisis Intervention Trainer who started volunteer hotline work in 1973. As an employee of the Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland, she has enjoyed such positions as Director of Community Education, Psych Intake Supervisor, Hotline Supervisor, Director of Safe Space Station and Advocacy Coordinator. She has been a community trainer since 1986. She is a John Carroll University graduate.

(RCH’s) Recognized Clock Hours are offered for all courses. The Center for Interpersonal Development/OIAS is an approved provider (06-08-10-1PVN) for the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board. All courses are approved for counselors.
(CPE’s) The Center for Interpersonal Development/OIAS is an approved continuing education provider for Counselors and Social Workers through the Ohio Counselor and Social Worker Board (RSX098804).
Nurses: The Ohio Board of Nursing recognizes continuing education hours approved by other Ohio licensing boards.
Teachers: Teachers may seek approval of CEUs through their LPDC.
Certificates: Certificates will be presented at the conclusion of each course to qualified registrants. Certificates will not be presented for partial attendance. There is an administrative fee of $10 for a replacement certificate
