650 MDD, GAD or SIMD: How DoYou Spell Relief?

This workshop is designed to help clinicians working with clients who are experiencing symptoms of major depression and anxiety disorders in early recovery. Emphasis will be on utilizing the biopsychosocial model to construct a more complete picture of the client’s world, in order to facilitate differential diagnosis. Participants will gain an understanding of the neurochemistry involved in these disorders, as compared to that of the client in acute, or post-acute withdrawal from drugs and alcohol. Client strengths and person-in-environment perspectives will be utilized. Treatment approaches will be reviewed, especially evidenced-based protocols such as CBT and integrated treatment for the dually diagnosed client. Some less common, but effective treatment approaches will be proposed, such as holistic treatments like narrative therapy, art therapy, and nutrition. Participants may wish to bring case histories to share.

651 The Resilient Human Being: Restoring Hope

This workshop focuses on resilience, a quality that is seldom recognized when assessing the client. The biopsychosocial model will be used to understand how resilience develops over the life span. The treatment of addiction and mental illness is so often seen only from the perspective of pathology, rather than from clients' strengths. Increasingly, researchers are investigating the ways individuals develop normally, or even thrive, in the face of significant risk factors for psychopathology. Perspectives from positive psychology, medical anthropology, neurobiology, psychoneuroimmunology, Gestalt and 12-step recovery will be reviewed. The qualifities of the "survivor personality" and the role that story-telling plays in healing will be examined. Interventions to foster hope and build self-efficacy in client populations, as well as specific strategies to increase reilience will be covered.
