618  Food is a Drug:  How Diet Affects Recovery

Many clients find that they have a cross-addiction to food once drugs and alcohol are eliminated from their lifestyles.  New evidence from research on neurobiology reveals that some of the same brain structures and neurotransmitters pertaining to alcohol and drug addiction are involved in food addiction as well.  This course will examine food addiction from a biopsychosocial perspective and will look at the differences between eating disorders and food addiction for the purpose of differential diagnosis.  The role food, appetite and weight gain play in recovery and relapse will be examined as clients may have issues with body image and impulse control.  Twelve-step recovery programs for food addiction will be examined, along with cognitive behavioral therapy approaches to maintaining a healthy weight.   Finally, the role diet has in relation to mental  health and general wellness will be explored and suggestions will be given for best supporting the client’s health.

645  Emotional Management:  Love, Lust and Limerence

Our clients come to us with a wide ranging list of feelings dysfunctions.  Among the most difficult of these is the inability to love and be loved.  In terms of loving relationships, they report false starts, confusing endings, painful process, confusion about what this thing call love is and how to “do it” to name a few.  Many have not had good (or any) role models for how to love and be loved.  Most fall into the common trap of confusing the 3 L’s; Love, Lust and Limerence.  Operational definitions of the 3 L’s will be given as well as techniques for loving and being loved effectively.

530  Understanding and Treating Addictive Behaviors:  An Overview

Many people develop addictive behaviors that become the major focus of their life, and the addictive behaviors may harm their life or others in many or all major life areas.  This workshop explores how a person becomes addicted, dependent, or compulsively obsessed with anything, and the similarities between physical addiction to various chemicals-- such as alcohol and heroin-- and psychological dependence to activities such as compulsive gambling, sex, work, running, shopping, or eating disorders will be explored and examined.    It will be discussed how developing addictive behaviors affects an addicted individual’s brain chemicals, thus leading to continuation of the behavior even though it may have negative health or social consequences.  Participants will be able to identify/discuss the common characteristics among addictive behaviors. Although there is no consensus as to the etiology (cause), prevention and treatment of addictive disorders, the participants will discuss how to competently administer prevention and treatment strategies that are effective.
